Black Pencil Project - Ifugao Leg: Successful

The BPP Team have just arrived from the Ifugao Trip and we're happy to conclude that the activity was indeed a success. There were 20 participants (16 Photographers,4 Guest Volunteers). We are happy to know everyone enjoyed the trip, found it worthwhile, fun and one-of-a-kind experience.

Day 1.

We arrived in Banaue an hour late from our projected itinerary. Immediately, we turned-over boxes of pencils (1000 pcs. + 1 heavy duty sharpener) for Pola, Patapat, Cambulo and Nagor communities as well as gift packs for Banaue Day Care Center through Banaue Tourism Council Office. We then proceeded to Mayoyao town afterwards, met two road blocks along the way. We arrived at about pass 8pm.

Day 2.

We scoured villages and houses of Mayoyao Proper to meet the kids/ locals and handed out pencils. We were not disappointed. They, in turn, gleefully strike a pose with our cameras sharing their stories and dreams to the group. In the evening, the town mayor Romeo Chulana went his way to meet us and we turned-over the boxes of pencils and school items. We decided it would be best that we involve the local government units in the distribution to be able to reach the farthest communities. The mayor was very happy to receive us and was very surprised to know that the items we brought were from individual contributions and pledges. He said the items we brought will be valuable for their Day Care Programs. The BPP Team conferred with the Mayor Chulana on how we can work together in the near future.

With 20 people joining us as well as nameless donors and volunteers, BPP is no longer a three-man team. Thank you for taking part and believing in this initiative.

We still collect pencils after this for future trips. Towards end of the month, partner Mountaineering groups had requested pencils for distribution in Kalinga and Tarlac province.

The targeted volume of 2000 pieces of black pencils were easily met from individual donations together with some other items like crayons, assorted quantity of erasers, sharpeners, pad papers, and bond paper rims

Early June of this year, friends Edmond Corpuz, Edwin Karganilla and Zer Cabatuan took a time off their respective busy lives in the city to do the other thing that they love, photography, which they fondly refer to as their "stress-reliever."

They were gunning for the scenic spot of the famous Banaue rice terraces in Ifugao province. Armed with their lens and P500 worth of black pencils, they set out on their trek. Their cameras were for the landscape and the black pencils were for the local children who would usually mob new faces.Read more

It's very unfortunate that the bad weather is preventing us to push our schedule this month, hopefully the 1st or second week of August.

Anyways, our heartfelt thanks to everyone who extends their support, pledges and donation to the project. I have received your informations already and will do schedule when pick up the items.

By the way, I passed by Binondo yesterday and was surprised to see school suppliers so I canvassed prices -

Php 20.00 - 12pcs. Jumbo Pencils (Black Pencils)
Php 4.50 - Crayons 12's

We're looking at the possibility to create 'packages' to go with pencils depending on the resources available. I realized a 50 pesos worth of school items would be a handful already.

Why Black Pencils?

There is a logic behind the black pencils, usually this is the type of pencil prescribed to kinder up to grade 3 because of its size and grip for most public schools around the country. So logically, we're targeting only those who are entering Grades 1 to 3.

Why?

These ages are the segment where they're most excited to go to school and yet very vulnerable.

In the remote places, only Primary School is offered (Grades 1-3), so kids entering Intermediate (Grade 4- 6) will have to walk to the nearest barangay in their area to be able to attend classes.

In some areas, because of poverty, kids instead of going to school, opt to help their parents doing farm errands in particularly during cropping season which happens in the middle of school year.

Having this scenario, its hard to address everything and we (as an individuals) can only give so much. I am sure some organizations are already doing that (giving books, bags, slippers) and we want to focus to areas where we think we are most effective.

Moving Hearts

We've been receiving favorable support from friends and strangers, expressing interest and and some even made several pledges.
We're planning to go back either later part of July or 2nd week of August so we can take advantage of the enthusiasm of the kids in going to school. An informal study says that kids drop out is observed at the second quarter of the school year between September - November (in time for cropping season for most areas in the country).

Black Pencil Project is a personal initiative to help provide pencils through resources mobilizations to public elementary schools in the remote barangays accross the country. It aims to encourage localized participation and individual commitment of goodwill in support to government education programs in the countryside.

Initial beneficiaries of the project are kids in Cambulo, Banaue, Ifugao.
